Koshiro Onchi and The Printmakers of Sosaku Hanga

"...Sosaku-Hanga is a movement which started at the end of Meiji period. Its concept was that printmakers should 'draw by themselves,' 'engrave by themselves' and 'print by themselves.' Japanese traditional print Ukiyo-e was made in a 3-step process; painting, engraving and printing. Kanae Yamagata and his group advocated that 'Prints should not be a copy of picture.' Koshiro Onchi was one of representative printmaker of this movement. His works gained a worldwide recognition.
